What happens to our machines when we’re gone? The idea of automated systems continuing their programmed routines long after humanity’s departure sparked something in my imagination. What began as a thought experiment evolved into an AI-generated short film that explores the intersection of nature and technology in a post-human world.
The Creative Process
The journey began with extensive prompt engineering. I wanted to capture specific moments: Wildlife reclaiming territory once occupied by humans, drones checking empty buildings and abandoned data centers and vegetation slowly reclaiming our concrete landscapes. Each scene required careful consideration of composition, lighting, and the delicate balance between decay and preservation.
What makes this project unique is its perspective. By choosing to tell the story through automated drone footage, we’re seeing this new Earth through the eyes of the machines we left behind. It’s both impersonal and intimate – a mechanical observer documenting the slow transformation of our world.
Technical Challenges
Creating this film pushed the boundaries of current AI technology. Each frame needed to maintain consistency while showing the gradual blend of manufactured precision and natural chaos. I experimented with multiple AI video generation models to achieve the right aesthetic, often combining outputs to create the perfect balance of photorealistic detail and artistic interpretation.
The biggest challenge was maintaining visual continuity between scenes. When working with AI-generated imagery, small details can shift unexpectedly. Also animal movement can be awkward.
Thematic Elements
Throughout After Humans, several themes emerge:

Sound Design
The audio landscape was crucial in bringing this world to life. I wanted to create a soundtrack that blended mechanical rhythms with natural ambience – the hum of functioning machinery intermingling with wind through overgrown streets. The goal was to create an atmosphere that feels both familiar and alien, much like the world depicted in the film.

After Humans represents more than just an experimental film – it’s a meditation on our relationship with technology and nature. As AI continues to evolve, projects like this help us explore new ways of storytelling and imagine possible futures. The film raises questions about sustainability, technological autonomy, and humanity’s impact on Earth, while leaving space for viewers to draw their own conclusions.
